A Long-Term Guest (LTG) is someone who is not a Woodsworth member but has been formally approved by the Board of Directors to live in a member’s household.
This webpage outlines the rules for long-term guests under the bylaws.
What a long-term guest (LTG) Is
– An LTG lives in a co-op unit as part of a member’s household
– LTG status only exists after Board approval
– LTGs are not members, but may apply for membership later
– LTGs count toward occupancy standards, which can affect unit size eligibility
What a long-term guest (LTG) is not
– Do not receive member privileges
– Cannot join the internal waiting list
– Cannot hold a unit on their own; cannot remain in the unit if all members move out or relocate in Woodsworth
– Exception: Death of a member, Occupancy Bylaw, Article 10.4
Rules and responsibilities
LTGs must follow all co-op bylaws, policies, and the LTG Agreement
Approval process (Required)
– A member submits a written request to the Board using the approved request form.
– The LTG Request Form is completed and signed by all household members and the LTG and the completed form is sent to Management.
– Management forwards the request to the Board on an upcoming Board agenda.
– The Board reviews and votes.
– If approved, everyone signs a Long-Term Guest Agreement (Schedule B, Occupancy Bylaw).
– A person is not considered an LTG until the Board approves the request and the LTG agreement is signed and witnessed.
The Board may approve LTG status:
– For a fixed term
– For a maximum term
– Indefinitely
The Board can change or cancel LTG status at any time.
Income and Subsidy
LTG income is normally included in household income
– This income can affect housing charge subsidy eligibility.
– Households must report LTG income accurately and keep subsidy documents up to date.
LTGs and Membership
– LTGs may later apply for membership as internal applicants. There is no waiting period before an approved long-term guest can attend an information session hosted by the Membership Committee. (These are held annually.)
– Membership is not automatic, regardless of how long they’ve lived in the co-op as a guest or long-term guest or as a dependent of a member.
Approval for membership requires:
– Agreement from all those in the household who are members
– Completion of the full membership process (Membership Bylaw)
– Board approval and signing of the occupancy agreement (Schedule A, Occupancy Bylaw).
If accepted, the LTG becomes a full member but must wait 2 years before:
– Having their own unit
– Joining the internal waiting list
Special Situations
– Teens who turn 19 and do not apply for membership automatically become LTGs.
They do not need to apply for long-term guest status while living with their family members in Woodsworth. Youth aged 16–19 may apply through the Turning 16 process, which is simpler.
