COOPERATIVE HOUSING IS REVOLUTIONARY!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Co-op housing, such as Woodsworth, is collective home ownership. Members don’t “own” their individual units. Instead we all own the entire co-op together. There’s no landlord, and Woodsworth is not at the mercy of the free market because it is a non-profit. Members set the housing charges (rent) based on our co-op’s needs.<\/p>\n

As you can see, Woodsworth is ours. This means members must step up to fill the necessary roles. It cannot run otherwise.<\/p>\n

This week we are highlighting the Membership Committee election.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Woodsworth\u2019s Membership Committee is a key elected committee and with a new Membership Bylaw to help us with our work, it is an important group to join. There are seven committee members elected for a two-year term. (In 2025, three (3) members will be elected.)<\/p>\n

Meetings and your commitment:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The committee normally meets once a month. (The new bylaw requires the committee to meet at least eight (8) times per year.) Of course there are sometimes tasks between meetings, especially when there is an information session planned.<\/p>\n

What the Membership Committee does:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Membership Committee organizes and hosts information sessions for Long-Term Guests, Turning 16\u2019s and external people. After interviewing these attendees, the committee makes recommendations for membership to the Board of Directors. The committee responds to membership inquiries and concerns. Membership also provides feedback on membership bylaws when needed. Management maintains waiting lists and makes offers of units, and the committee liaises with them about membership matters.<\/p>\n

How to become a member of the Membership Committee:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Remember you can nominate yourself! Fill in a committee nomination form (available on bulletin boards, online and in the Photocopy Room). Sign it and return to the Elections Committee through the new election\u2019s mailbox in the Photocopy Room on the 2nd floor.<\/p>\n

Write a short bio, plus photo of yourself. The bio should introduce yourself to members. Possibly include why you are standing. Other helpful information might include a specific skill that you feel is useful. The photo does not need to be studio worthy; a selfie is fine. It helps members to place you in their minds. When happy with your bio, simply send it to the election committee email address: nominate@woodsworthcoop.ca.<\/p>\n

TESTIMONIAL FOR MEMBERSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, a testimonial from one of our co-op’s many heroes, a member who steps up for Woodsworth over and over again, Yanina Jezek:<\/p>\n

All told I was on membership committee for four years. The first two years I co-chaired even though I didn’t know a whole lot about the membership committee. I listened and learned from the experienced members on the committee. Then I chaired for two years and learned a lot more about how things run in the office and the co-op as a whole. Also I had a great team. Many who became friends. I encourage people to run for this committee. It is not too demanding and it is interesting.<\/em><\/p>\n
