{"id":16146,"date":"2024-09-23T13:04:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T17:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.woodsworthcoop.ca\/?p=16146"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:53:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T02:53:35","slug":"social-audit-1989-objective-4-board-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.woodsworthcoop.ca\/index.php\/social-audit-1989-objective-4-board-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Social audit 1989: Objective 4 &#8211; Board leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That the\u00a0 Board\u00a0 of\u00a0 Directors\u00a0 provide\u00a0 leadership\u00a0 in\u00a0 long-term planning and fostering a co-operative community spirit within Woodsworth.<\/p>\n<p>FlNDlNGS<\/p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Woodsworth Boards have generally met twice each month with meetings usually running 2-3 hours.<\/p>\n<p>71% of the current or former Board members said they felt too little Board time was spent on long-term planning and the development of our co-operative community.<\/p>\n<p>All\u00a0 of those\u00a0 saying\u00a0 too\u00a0 little\u00a0 time\u00a0 was\u00a0 spent\u00a0 on\u00a0 long-term\u00a0 planning stated that the reason was &#8220;other issues were priorities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A review of Board minutes does not illustrate how past Board directed their time at meetings.\u00a0 The current Board is keeping minutes that will indicate how much time is spent on what topics.\u00a0 This will allow future study.<\/p>\n<p>IMPLICATIONS<\/p>\n<p>From the questionnaire answers, the great majority of current and former Board members felt that not enough time has been devoted to longer-term issues and planning. \u00a0 Boards have traditionally spent a great deal of time on current operational and management matters.\u00a0 It is unrealistic to expect these issues to decrease, so future Boards must determine how to decrease Board involvement in operational and management matters to free up more time for long-term planning and community development.<\/p>\n<p>RECOMMENDED ACTIONS<\/p>\n<p>Given the number of local co-ops, Woodsworth should ask CHFT to hold\u00a0 an\u00a0 annual\u00a0 Board\u00a0 training\u00a0 program\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 St.\u00a0 Lawrence neighbourhood. \u00a0 Proper training will help Board members learn to differentiate its responsibilities and those of committees and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The Board should immediately implement a strong Board\/Committee liaison system so these groups can work together more effectively on longer term issues.<\/p>\n<p>The members should ask the Board to leave more of the operational issues to staff in order to free up Board time to meet this social objective.<\/p>\n<p>Given the workload placed on the Board, the membership should consider expanding the Board to nine members.<\/p>\n<p>The Coordinator should be asked to place a copy of the most recent Board minutes on the bookshelf outside the office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodsworthcoop.ca\/index.php\/social-audit-1989\/\">To: Home page with table of contents for Social Audit 1989<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That the\u00a0 Board\u00a0 of\u00a0 Directors\u00a0 provide\u00a0 leadership\u00a0 in\u00a0 long-term planning and fostering a co-operative community spirit within Woodsworth.
